Homeowners Insurance in Brevard County: What Changed in 2026
Florida's property insurance market had its best year in a decade, but Brevard's relief was smaller than South Florida's.
The statewide picture
In December 2025, Citizens Property Insurance proposed its first average rate cut since 2015: 2.6% statewide for personal lines. Citizens said 17 new insurers had entered Florida since the state's litigation reforms, and more than 546,000 Citizens policies moved to private carriers in 2025 alone.
The Brevard picture
Brevard was one of the exceptions at first. The December 2025 proposal included an average 6.5% Citizens increase for Brevard. After state review, the Office of Insurance Regulation's approved 2026 Brevard average came in at about $2,812, down 2.4% from $2,881, according to a local analysis of OIR data. Brevard ranks 19th of 67 Florida counties for average Citizens premium.
Most Brevard homeowners aren't on Citizens. With more private carriers back in the market, shopping your policy is worth it.
How to lower your premium
- Get a wind mitigation inspection. Roof straps, impact windows and shutters, and roof shape can earn real discounts.
- Know your roof's age. Many carriers won't write a new policy on an older shingle roof, or they charge more for it.
- Order a 4-point inspection on older homes before you buy, so roof, electrical, plumbing and HVAC surprises don't kill your quote.
- Check flood risk separately. Standard homeowners policies don't cover flood. Look up the home's flood zone and ask for a flood quote, even outside high-risk zones.
Tip for buyers
Get insurance quotes during your inspection period, not the week before closing. On older homes, especially on the barrier island and in Merritt Island, insurance can change your monthly payment by hundreds of dollars.
